He’s just an island boy with big city dreams. Fashion blogger, Shawn Cruz, that is. By day, this 21-year old fashion enthusiast, originally from the island of Saipan, helps “plain Janes discover their inner swans.” By night, he is “The SC Experience.” We knew Shawn and his alter ego “SC” couldn’t be spending all their time just capturing stylish moments on Instagram so we had a chat to find out what they really get up to in Sin City…
Tell us about yourself.
I’m originally from the island of Saipan in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Saipan is part of a chain of beautiful islands called the Northern Mariana Islands. By now I would not be surprised if you’re about to look it up on Google. Not very many people are familiar with where I’m from. I guess you can say we’re exotic.
During the day, I work for a major department store as an assistant department manager. There’s nothing more exciting than helping plain Jane discover her inner swan. You’d be surprised with what clothes, shoes, and accessories can do to a woman’s self confidence; this is probably the main reason why I love what I do. At night, I’m a hero who fights crime! Just kidding, I run my personal style blog.
I started blogging almost a year ago after a few people encouraged me to pursue it as a hobby. I finally caved in and now the rest is pretty much history. Contrary to popular belief, my life really isn’t as exciting as some people think it is.
In my free time I’m probably refueling my mind with useless celebrity gossip. Don’t judge me, it’s just a guilty pleasure I can’t get rid of. Haha I love working on DIY projects. I’m a huge fan of documentaries; anything about Ancient Egypt fascinates me. I enjoy thrift store shopping; I’ve discovered some phenomenal pieces at ridiculously low prices! I’ve been such a homebody these days; no nightlife for me, even in the city of sin.
You were were born and raised in the island of Saipan and now live in Las Vegas. What’s living in Vegas like, and how does the city influence your style?
You know, before moving to Las Vegas I had such a one-sided idea of what this city was all about. All I knew about this place was its reputation for nightlife, but honestly there’s another side to this city. Vegas is actually pretty interesting. Las Vegas has so much history; I guess you can say it’s iconic. You never know what hidden gem you might stumble upon within this desert.
Vegas has influenced my style to a certain degree. I love to people watch; it’s one way I get my inspiration for future looks. You come across people from all different walks of life on a regular basis; each person having their own interpretation of personal style. From there, I dissect what I like and keep a mental note for future reference. Since I’ve moved to Las Vegas, my style has gone from one extreme to another. I love to mix things up and I can thank this city for being so influential.
Shawn is laid back and mellow, however SC is another story. Details please!
I guess you can say he’s my alter ego. Shawn’s the overachiever and then there’s SC… the rebel.
Shawn’s conservative and simple, but my alter ego is the fashion aficionado. I am one of the most down to earth people you will ever meet, but never underestimate me. SC’s got a ton of personality. He’s opinionated, sarcastic, and loud. He’s also really outgoing and pretty funny, but never light his fuse. If I make a lasting impression on you, it’s probably because you got to experience this other side of me… The SC Experience.
What is your personal motto or mantra?
“Stay optimistic, remain humble, and remember where you came from.”
Who are your style icons?
This is a tough one. I love Pharell Williams and Brad Goreski’s style. I look to Pharell for street wear inspiration while I run over to Brad for more “dapper” ideas. Two men with two different takes on fashion, but both of them are just as influential as the other.
What are you most looking forward to wearing this summer?
Chinos and graphic tees! They are my go-to pieces as of right now.
What are the short and long term goals for both Shawn and SC Experience?
One short term goal that I have for myself is finally visiting New York City. I’ve postponed my trip to NYC three years in a row; therefore, this future visit is long overdue. New York also ties in with a short term goal for my blog (The SC Experience). I would love to attend fashion week as a guest blogger. Honestly, that would be an awesome experience.
There are so many goals I want to eventually achieve. I’d love to go behind the scenes to help style a collection for fashion week in New York or London. One day, I hope I will be able to be a part of the creative team for a major fashion magazine. I know I still have a lot of work to do before I can get to that level, but the wait will be so worth it. Aside from all things glamorous, I just want to make sure I don’t lose myself in this ever changing industry. Don’t get me wrong, change is good, but I don’t want to forget where I came from and how this all started. I hope I’ll be able to reach out to a much larger audience; however, I want to be a positive influence because I stayed true to my roots.
If you could give one piece of advice to your 14 year-old self, what would it be?
Fashion related advice: Stop wearing that visor. It is not a good look for you. Yikes… (hahaha)
Advice on life: Try to be more optimistic about how things are unfolding. Your freshman year will not define the rest of your high school experience.
What’s been your coolest fashion experience so far?
As of right now, it would have to be being a part of Levi’s and Lookbook.nu’s #501 online campaign. It was such an amazing opportunity. Definitely one for the books!
