Reason #401: New Yorkers know the best dreams happen when you’re wide awake.

Last week, we featured Part 1 of our exclusive interview with Eljay, the founder of popular Instagram account, @whyilovenewyorkcity

Called a “cult favorite” by many fans, Eljay’s Instagram page has skyrockted in popularity to over 19,000 fans in less than a year. We finish our interview with the Instagram master today.

Thank you for featuring the Wantering girls in your latest post, Reason 410: You smile like nobody is watching.

    Who are your NYC icons?

Jimmy Fallon has to be one of my most favorite New York City icons. I look up to him because he seems like a simple guy in a big spotlight. He has charisma and is loveable and relatable. I gotta admit though, his style has gotten a lot slicker over the years.

What are your fave hobbies and loves in the city?

I love going to the movies, collecting vintage and graphic t-shirts, and food.

I love the Brooklyn Bridge Park. It keeps me at peace. My wife and I locked our lock there.

My heart will always be in Bed-Stuy since my first apartment was there. That’s where I learned how to start from the bottom and be on my own.

I love collecting glasses in St. Marks.

I love walking around and getting lost around the city. The best part about getting lost in New York is that you find new things that stir your soul.

Fast forward 5 years. Where will Eljay and @whyilovenewyorkcity be?

In 5 years and beyond, I still want to continue giving the people what they want: hope, faith, and dreams can come true no matter where you feel you are at in life. I am absolutely confident that I will be in a place where I can bridge New Yorkers from around the world.

What’s your fave item from our new search engine on www.wantering.com that you think is perfect for New York summers?

I was actually non-stop playing around with the search engine for hours and got addicted into how I was able to find so many things for me that was fitting my personal style criteria.

Recently, I have been addicted to buying shoes. Like I said, my style is really plain. I wear t-shirts, jeans, and a nice pair of sunglasses.

I love the Castaner Pablo Canvas Espadrilles - perfect for me. I’m planning to buy a pair today! Wantering is my new supplier for shoes.

What do you think about the style in New York?

I think once you’re here in New York City, your true personality finally comes out. The way you talk, the way you walk, the way you look at yourself, and the way you wear your shoes. I think that the freedom here sets this place apart from anywhere else in the world.

I do enjoy finding some inspiration from other people and incorporating it as my own, but I somehow always keep going back to my country roots. And I truly love that. I am able to just be comfortable with what I want to wear and who I want to be. A lot of people always tell me that style defines a person’s character, but I believe more that style defines the ENERGY of a person.

If you could give one piece of advice to your 14 year-old self, what would it be?

Stop worrying about what other people think of you. It keeps you from being who you want to be. It stops you from doing what you really want to do. It’ll lead to people actually thinking worse about you than what you started it out to be.
