Paris Haute Couture

Paris Haute Couture… the stuff dreams are made of. Or in some cases, those odd dreams you have between waking up and falling asleep again only to wake up 5 minutes later and you could have sworn it was actually happening.

Haute couture is that exhilarating space in fashion where the wildest imaginations can flourish and each designer manages to shock-and-awe with each masterly crafted piece. This year was no different, invoking that living-in-a-dream state, and for a brief moment being whisked away into the minds behind each collection.

Diving into best dresses, Elie Saab, Giambattista Valli and Georges Hobeika showed us elegance in pretty pastels, complimentary bold colors and perfectly placed details.

Favorites this year were Christian Dior and Chanel. With textured materials and masculine accessories, Dior’s collection was both mature and perfectly creative. Anyone else feel the need to wear sock garters with heels and slick their hair back? Chanel’s choice to use Cara Delevingne also couldn’t have been more on point. Her edgy and playful presence perfectly complimented the gracefully sporty theme of the show. You don’t really expect to see silver kneepads on the same person who is wearing pastel tweed paired with runners, but here it just works.

And now for this year’s true to form, boundary-pushing collections: Jean Paul Gaultier and Maison Martin Margiela. Gaultier was filled with butterfly everything (hair included), lace, fish net, tulle, long leather gloves… and Dita Von Teese basically as a butterfly. Maison Martin Margiela redefined the meaning of “arm party” and gave us flashbacks to American Horror Story season 1, in a really good, can’t-stop-watching-when-is-season-2 kind of way.
